The Gallopers end the Red Heavies undefeated record

GPS defeated the University of Queensland 45-42 and added the Welsby Cup and Halley Appleby Memorial Trophy to Yoku Road’s collection.

The Gallopers produced a stunning performance with super sub Troy Simkin scoring after the siren to snatch victory.

It didn’t start well for GPS with University’s Jock Campbell sliding through a stunned defensive line to find Pat Morrey unmarked, to score in the corner.

Frisby responded with a try under the sticks after the GPS forward pack decimated the Red Heavies scrum.

Radike Samo extended GPS lead to 14-5 after pouncing on the ball that popped out of the struggling Red Heavies’ scrum.

The Heavies began to use their backline more effectively with Nathan Russell bursting through GPS’ defence after a quick tap.

A penalty to AJ Alatimu and some crafty skills from Joshua Birch to find Harry Parker in the corner meant scores were locked at 17-all.

GPS looked to level the score before the half ended and set up camp inside the 22m line with a clear plan to relentlessly pressure the Heavies’ scrum.

The pressure was too much for the Heavies with James McColl being sent to the sin bin for scrum infringements and Jock Campbell also sent off for a deliberate knock down.

With only 13 players on the field, Harry Parker used his incredible pace to beat multiple defenders and eventually find Nathan Russell who finished the spectacular full field try.

UQ had a commanding 34-24 lead before Samo claimed his second try of the game.

The Heavies hit back instantly but a try to Mitch King and a penalty kick to Alex Horan meant the students had to protect their 42-38 lead for just eight minutes.

UQ were pushed back within a meter of the try line before they began celebrating a win after the Galloper’s made an error in the close quarters play.

Fortunately for GPS, they had an advantage and Simkin received the ball on a quick tap and bashed his way over to give GPS a win those at Yoku Road will never forget.

Alatimu added the extras to top off a perfect day with the boot to make the final score 45-42.

Next week GPS take on Easts at Bottomley Park whereas the Red Heavies welcome Bond University to St. Lucia for the battle of the students.
