Match Report GPS V UQ

GPS unfortunately  came away from their Round 4 Queensland Premier Rugby top-of-the-table clash against UQ with a 28-15 defeat at St Lucia. UQ’s defence was solid throughout the match, repelling numerous GPS’ attacking raids. Despite the result, GPS will take positives away from an incredibly dominant scrummaging display as they forced UQ into conceding numerous penalties.

UQ started the game well when  their winger Harry Parker sliced through on the counter attack, offloaded to Gareth Kalell who crossed in the corner inside the opening minute. GPS had UQ pinned on their own try line and levelled the scores when Noa Tuqiri crashed over close to the ruck. AJ Alatimu’s conversion attempt was charged down by Parker in the 14th minute to keep the scores locked at five-all.

Tom Dalgleish converted a  penalty goal after the 35th minute and GPS had one last crack at cutting the deficit, but they fell short of the line and the team’s headed to the half-time break with UQ leading 11-5. After half-time, Dalgleish raced up out of the line to intercept the ball and race away for the first points of the second stanza. Despite suffering two yellow cards, GPS showed determination to stay in the match and Laione Mulikihaamea cut UQ’s lead to three points with fifteen minutes remaining. UQ hooker Lyall Fidow extended the home side’s lead before Harry Parker put the nail in the coffin, receiving a perfectly weighted inside ball from Dalgleish to slice through for another UQ try.

In other grade GPS managed to have a good day out and  secure victories against UQ in Premier Reserve, Premier Colts, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade and 4th Grade. GPS will host their first home game of the season when they welcome Wests to Yoku Rd on the 22nd of April. We look forward to seeing everyone down there for this ANZAC Round clash.
