GPS secured a 16-10 victory over Brothers at Yoku Road in Queensland Premier Rugby’s Game of the Round.
Ill-discipline took its toll on Brothers with two players sent off consecutively in the second half, allowing Mitch King to score a crucial try for the Gallopers.
Due to the Super Rugby break, Brumbies forward Benjamin Hyne started for Brothers while GPS welcomed back St.George Queensland Reds flyer Chris Kuridrani.
The rivalry started intensely with a high tackle giving Lawson Creighton an easy opportunity to give Brothers a three-point lead.
Brother’s momentum continued with several half breaks giving them prime attacking opportunities deep inside the Gallopers’ territory.
With phases building, the Brothers forward pack challenged their rivals close to line with their quick pick and drives resulting in their only try of the day to Ted Postal.
GPS also spotted opportunities around the base of the ruck with lock Daniel Byrne crashing over to narrow the Brethren’s lead to 10-5.
The back and forth play continued but the boot of AJ Alatimu punished Brothers giving the Gallopers a one-point lead with 20 minutes left to play.
A red card to Ryan Freney proved less costly than expected with Troy Simkin filling his role to ensure the GPS scrum remained dominant.
With only seven players in the scrum, GPS drove through the Brethren pack with Dustin Henegan being sent off for repeated infringements.
Brothers were their own worst enemy with a tip tackle from Hyne in the next play resulting in just 13 Brethren on the field.
Yet another dominant scrum gave Mitch King the perfect platform to break to the blind side and crash over the line to give the Gallopers a narrow lead.
Brothers were unable to recover from their poor discipline and the Gallopers ended their 130th year anniversary celebrations with a 16-10 victory.
GPS dominated the rest of the day with six wins from seven games against Brothers.
Premier Grade has a BYE next weekend but the rest of the club take on Logan in an away fixture.
