The Gallopers travelled down the M1 to Bond University to record a 50-7 opening round victory on Saturday. After leading 19-0 at half time, the Gallopers added another 31 points in the second half to record their first win in many outings at Bond University.
Prop Laione Mulikahaamea was outstanding in the first half, displaying power and speed to open up the Bond defence on numerous occasions. He was well supported by Feleti Kaitu’u who scored the opening try and backed up for a double later in the match. Michael Richards and Noa Turuqi also scored doubles while Tom Christie and Fred Burke crashed over for tries.
The win was all the sweeter as Bond were kept scoreless while the Gallopers were reduced to 13 players midway through the first half. The combination of new recruits and seasoned premier grade players defied an opposition with high hopes in the 2017 competition. AJ Alatimu at fly half directed the team well and kicked four conversions.
Premier Reserves recorded a hard earned victory with a great late comeback after getting the speed wobbles earlier in the game. The Premier Colts were unlucky not to come away with a victory. Bond resisted a last minute attack from the GPS Premier Colts team to narrowly win the game 19-17. Colts 1 fought gallantly to just miss out 27-19 in a very entertaining match.
