Alatimu the dragon slayer

The Gallopers defeated the Dragons 17-15 in a last gasp victory in Queensland Premier Rugby’s game of the round.

Sunnybank drew first blood in the fixture with hooker Moli Sooaemalelagi darting down the sideline to score in the corner.

The physical Sunnybank side had a clear plan early on to combat the Galloper’s rampaging forward pack.

So far this season, the Gallopers have been using their scrum as an offensive and defensive weapon, earning them a penalty try and a narrow victory over Wests in Round 5.

Despite early slip-ups, Sunnybank earned a scrum penalty and began to use the scrum as an opportunity to test the Galloper’s backline one on one.

Issak Fines-Leleiwasa’s impressive form continued, setting up Junior Laloifi after a clever switch close to the Galloper’s line.

Despite the two-try defecit, AJ Alatimu kept the Galloper’s in touch securing a vital penalty before the half to narrow the Dragon’s lead to 12-3.

Sunnybank were their own worst enemies in the second half, bombing several tries through handling errors.

The Galloper’s attack began to fire through Michael Richards who smashed between two defenders to cross for the Galloper’s first try.

Alatimu’s conversion was successful and narrowed the gap to 15-10 with only ten minutes left to play.

With the pressure mounting on the Dragons and a Galloper’s crowd in the thousands, there was no questioning something special was about to happen.

With only two minutes left to play it was once again the Galloper’s forward pack that seized a crucial opportunity.

After continuous phases near the Sunnybank try line, Laione Mulikihaamea bashed his way through the tired Dragons defence to level the score at 15-all.

Alatimu kept his composure from the sideline and slotted the conversion to give the Gallopers an impressive comeback win.
